Whilst this is true, it is of course impossible to assure or guarantee that a routine will prevent something from happening.

Still, we have exercise routines to prevent heart disease, healthy diets to prevent fat build up and more. Those are not magic bullets, but rather a common sense, tried-and-tested approach to a problem.

In today’s post, we wanted to give a few guidelines to ‘prevent’ abscesses from developing, but of course, there are no guarantees. It’s simply a bit of common sense and advise on keeping up a good, healthy oral routine.

So here goes: the best way to prevent an abscessed tooth is by practicing good oral hygiene. Also, make sure to visit your dentist regularly!

Proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups will always be your weapons in reducing the risks of having an abscessed tooth and other gum diseases.

We’ve talked about abscesses over the past few days, to help others understand how they should deal with them in the event one develops.

In the case of a patient already having an abscess and willing to deal with it, there may be some anxiety regarding the procedure, so in this post we’re going to delve into a typical timeline, so you know what to expect.

In treating an abscessed tooth, your dentist would want to have these 3 goals in mind:

remove the infection

preserve the tooth

prevent other complications that may result from the treatment

In order to remove the infection, the abscess needs to be drained through a root canal procedure. A root canal is also necessary to remove any diseased root tissue that may be present.

Another way for the dentist to drain the abscess would be to create an incision into the swollen tissue. In some cases, the abscessed tooth may need to be extracted, so drainage can be achieved through the socket.

Finally, the dentist would typically prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers to prevent infection, and to keep the pain away during the healing stage that takes place after the procedure.

Hopefully this puts your mind at ease. If you have an abscessed tooth, you must deal with it right away. Visit your dentist and think about how good it will feel to be rid it it.

But what are the causes of an abscessed tooth, you may well ask. And that’s what we’re goign to answer here.

The causes of tooth abscess are chipped or broken teeth, gingivitis, tooth decay, or periodontal disease. Gum disease is another cause, for it allows bacteria to grow and spread around the tooth. This results in an abscess forming under the surface of the gums, leading to extreme swelling and pain.

This is why it’s important to visit your dentist regularly for a dental checkup as a supplement to your own dental hygiene.

That checkup you’ve been putting off may just help you prevent something in the future!

OK folks, we couldn’t help that one.

But it’s true: this week we’ve been talking about painful Wisdom teeth, oral surgery, tooth extraction, dealing with post-tooth extraction, and now… abscessed teeth!

As we’re fond of saying here at Puredental, prevention is better than cure, so let’s dig deeper into this topic and learn all we can folks!

So how do you know if you have an abscessed tooth?

If you have been experiencing a sharp and throbbing toothache that is continuous, accompanied by fever, swollen neck glands and gums, foul breath, and sores on the side of your gums—chances are you have an abscessed tooth.

Naturally, we advise that you visit your dentist right away.

What exactly is an abscessed tooth?
An abscessed tooth, or root abscess, is an infection that results from pus that is enclosed around the tissue of the tooth. Sometimes the infection originates from the tooth’s root, or between the gum and the tooth. This is usually the cause behind the excruciating pain that some people experience.

This is a serious condition that can lead to several problems when not treated accordingly. The infection may cause openings in the tooth enamel and then spread to the pulp(the center) of the tooth. Worse, an abscessed tooth can also lead to facial swelling and a dissolved jawbone.

By now you should be aware of how serious an abscess can turn out to be. If you’re suffering from the above symptoms, make visiting your dentist a top priority!

We’ll be back next week with more instalments, so until then, keep brushing!

Today’s tips go hand in hand with yesterday’s update, especially if you’ve undergone oral surgery or had a tooth extraction.

Today we want to talk about the post-extraction period.

Yes, dental hygiene is a habit for life folks… so after the painful tooth is gone, there’s still maintenance work to do!

You see, when the procedure is over, you may notice a little bleeding around the tooth, and maybe even some swelling. This is completely normal.

In some cases where you’re in pain, your dentist may prescribe medication to help you deal with the pain.

The thing to keep in mind is that this doesn’t usually last for long.

Having said this, it’s very important to follow the post-extraction care your dentist gives you.

Whatever that may be.

You may not be able to eat certain foods for a few days, but it’s worth the sacrifice —especially when you’re back to normal in no time – that’s when you’ll feel the difference after your mouth has fully recovered.

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth in the mouth to erupt. They are also known as your third set of molars. Most adults grow 32 teeth, the first 28 come at an early age, with the last set of four typically erupting at the back of the mouth by the time a person reaches the age of 17.

Some people may or may not have a painful experience with their wisdom teeth. The pain varies to certain degrees, depending on the location of the wisdom teeth when they erupt.

When wisdom teeth emerge at a much later time, the chances of them trying to push against your existing teeth and force their way up to the gums is most likely to happen. This is where the wisdom teeth become impacted — and painful. Since impacted wisdom teeth can be angled inward, outward, backward, or forward, they can create “pockets” or gaps between the teeth that will attract the growth of bacteria, leading to infection and decay.

Besides the pain, this is one good-enough reason for you to extract your impacted wisdom teeth as soon as possible.

If you’re having issues with your Wisdom teeth, and you’re in the area, contact Puredental for a consultation. If you’re not within easy reach of Liverpool, contact your own dentist and have them resolve your issue quickly.
